Leon County Commission Chair Christian Caban says an independent review has exposed financial mismanagement in the City of Tallahassee’s Fire Services Fund.

He says the review found an estimated revenue shortfall over two years between $15.8 million to $21.2 million.

A weekly deep dive into Tallahassee's most talked about news topic. Hosted by Gina Jordan every Thursday.

In an announcement Monday with Commissioner Bill Proctor, Caban said a consultant found the shortfall could have eliminated the need to increase the fire service fee for county residents last year.

“They’ve been billed a rate that was not fair, it was not equal, and it was not just. That is against state law,” Caban said during a news conference, standing behind a podium with a sign that read “DEMANDING ACCOUNTABILITY. PROTECTING TAXPAYERS.”

“I want to be clear,” Caban said. “Leon County residents and City of Tallahassee residents have legal damages.”

Caban wants refunds for those taxpayers and an audit by the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee, which provides audit oversight regarding school districts, local governments, and more.
